Is radiometry dangerous?

Definitely NO!

A common prejudice against radiometric measurements is that spending time near such a measurement is dangerous and causes high radiation exposure. However, the reality is different: By using modern and sensitive detectors, the measurements can operate with very low source activities. A dose rate of as little as 0.001 mSv/h is therefore sufficient for a radiometric measurement. In addition to low source activities, shields are also designed to comply with strict rules and regulations. Direct contact with the radioactive substance is practically impossible with today's sources and shields.

Compared to typical radiation exposures from everyday life, staying close to a properly installed radiometric measurement is safe!

X-rays in medicine are much more dangerous!

Thus, X-rays in the field of medical applications and various natural radioactivity cause a much higher radiation exposure than being near a radiometric measurement.

Nevertheless, respectful handling of radiometric measurements in accordance with regulations is inevitable.
